California Living Will (Advance Health Directive)

Last Updated: 11/23/2015

Document Description

Good health is a gift, and unfortunately one that many people lose later in their lives and some unexpectedly earlier. When and if the time comes when you are no longer able to make decisions about your own health care, you can either leave these critical decisions to be decided solely by others, or you can draft an advance health directive to make your wishes known.

Also known as a living will, the idea is simple: you state your wishes in a formal document, so that your loved ones are not forced to make difficult decisions for you. Do you want to be sustained on life support, if you slip into a persistent vegetative state? If you are terminally ill and incapacitated, do you want hospital care or hospice care?

No one enjoys dwelling on these and other similar decisions, but there is comfort in knowing that they are your decisions, and will not be made by hospital administrators, or forced upon your family. The ezEstatePlanner California Advance Health Directive complies with all of California’s laws and contains all necessary language to be enforceable if the worst were to happen.

As an added convenience, you can upload your signed California Advance Health Directive (along with your will or living trust, and any other health or estate planning forms) to your Estate Vault for safekeeping. You can access them at any time, and if something were to happen to you, your designated loved ones can also access your Estate Vault in emergencies.

Note: A living will/advance health directive should not be confused with a health care power of attorney, or with a living trust. For more information, feel free to review those documents separately, or read our article on What’s the Difference Between an Advance Health Directive and a Health Care Power of Attorney?
