Document Description
Accidents happen; everyone gets older, and there is no telling when you may fall ill. However, a Louisiana Advance Health Directive can help you prepare for the unexpected. Also known as a living will, an advance health directive allows you to plan your medical care decisions in the event that you may not be able to in the future.
Having this document prepared ahead of time allows you to make that time a little more comfortable for yourself and your loved ones. If you don’t have an advance health directive prepared, and you get sick or fall into a vegetative state, your loved ones have the possibility of making healthcare choices for you. This may not be a good time for them to make a decision because they could be thinking with their hearts, not their heads. When a loved one is sick, emotions can run high. Without this form in place, there may be disagreements, conflict and controversy among friends and family who are trying to make these difficult decisions.
The Louisiana Advance Health Directive allows you to choose whether or not you would like doctors to perform life-sustaining procedures to prolong your life if you are in a vegetative state. Although it is difficult making arrangements ahead of time, doing so will allow for smoother medical care. The Louisiana Advance Health Directive also includes the options for feeding tubes, organ donations and other medical decisions. These end-of-life choices also include your preferences about hospice, hospital or home care.
