Virginia Living Will (Advance Medical Directive)

Last Updated: 11/23/2015

Document Description

Good health is a blessing, but it is not always guaranteed. Devastating situations, such as terminal illness or a persistent vegetative state, often leave families unprepared to address the challenges of having a loved one in this condition. An advance health directive helps alleviate these concerns.

Also called a living will, an advance health directive gives you the ability to to communicate your wishes in terms of the future of your health in the event that a serious health condition prevents you from doing so. If you are ever in this unfortunate situation, this legally binding document ensures you will be taken care of the way you want.

This document carefully details the various aspects of medical treatment if you are unable to make decisions on your own. It specifies the life-sustaining procedures authorized, as well as states your preference regarding the use of a feeding tube. Additionally, it covers the setting of care and allows you to dictate whether you want to be cared for in hospice care, in a hospital or at home, if possible. This gives you the peace of mind of knowing that your medical needs will be taken care of according to your plan.

For additional convenience, the ezEstatePlanner Vault can be used to keep all of your estate and health planning documents in a secure and safe location. You and the loved ones you specify may access the ezEstatePlanner Vault at any time.

Note: An advance health directive (or a living will) does not serve the same purpose as health care power of attorney or a living trust.
